Over the years I have taught the full gamut of men from Wall Streeters to professional athletes. Contrary to popular belief, yoga is not a girlie practice. If that were the case, then the great yoga gurus from over the centuries would not have been men.
Some of the more physically demanding practices like Ashtanga or Vinyasa yoga were targeted towards twelve year old boys to help them with their hyperactivity and restless minds. I think a lot of men in New York have as much or possibly more trouble concentrating, staying focused, and dealing with stress then adolescent boys in India. If anything, guys in this town should be the best candidates for starting a yoga regimen.
1. Physical Benefits
Yoga will improve your flexibility, muscle tone, strength, and balance.
2. Improving your game
If you play sports yoga will help enhance your coordination, agility, endurance, and stamina.
3. Coping with stress and pressure
If you are overwhelmed with mounting pressures at work, can’t cope with the instability of the stock market, or lash out at your spouse because you don’t see a therapist when you really should, yoga may be your answer.
4. Meeting pretty girls
Yoga class is one of the best places to meet girls. The odds of meeting a health conscious, physically fit, spiritual girl with a great body is so much better in a yoga class then at a bar. If you are in a relationship, it’s probably best to keep this to yourself…
5. Step up your sex life
If you are struggling to connect with your partner, yoga can bring you closer. For starters, yoga can enhance your libido. It is also very sexy for a woman to see her man with a sense of inner stillness and control over his body.
I know a few of you would really like to get started with yoga but feel like you are too embarrassed to make a complete idiot of yourself in class. I want to assure you that no one will be paying attention to you or actually cares. If anything, people will give you credit for trying. On rare occasion I’ve seen a few dumb jocky guys that can’t help but act 5 years old, laugh uncontrollably and draw attention to themselves like a scene out of a Ben Stiller movie. But for the most part students are too busy focusing on their own practice. With that being said, if it makes you feel better it may not hurt to get a private instructor for the first few sessions.
